America at it's best

America is at its best this week and it is about time the rest of the world follows suit. The situation is dire and grave in Haiti, and America is showing its red this week. That is America’s big red heart. When needed that heart explodes with affection. Even in this economy, America comes through time and time again.

The President has pledged one hundred million dollars in tax payer money and a floating United States Navy Hospital. The Haitian people need help and it would be a lot better if the world’s nations would also pitch in. For the sake of human decency it is the right thing to do.

The international Red Cross estimated 45,000 to 50,000 people were killed in Tuesday's cataclysmic earthquake, based on information from the Haitian Red Cross and government officials. Hard-pressed recovery teams resorted to using bulldozers to transport loads of dead.

In Washington, President Barack Obama announced "one of the largest relief efforts in our recent history," starting with $100 million in aid. The U.S. Southern Command reported the first 100 of a planned 900 paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division landed in Haiti from North Carolina on Thursday to support disaster relief, to be followed this weekend by more than 2,000 Marines.

President Barack Obama promised an all-out rescue and humanitarian effort including the military and civilian emergency teams from across the U.S. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was expected to arrive off the coast Thursday and the Navy said the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan had been ordered to sail as soon as possible with a 2,000-member Marine unit

On Thursday morning's "The Early Show" on CBS, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton asked Americans to contribute to the Red Cross via text donations. And on social networks Twitter and Facebook, users continued to urge one another to text money as well.

Other charities, such as singer Wyclef Jean's Yele, were also collecting mobile donations. To send $5, donors can text "Yele" to the number 501501. The William J. Clinton Foundation was accepting $10 per text from users sending the word "Haiti" to 20222.

Verizon Wireless said Thursday morning its users have pledged more than $1 million to the Red Cross through text donations. The outpouring easily surpassed earlier records for mobile giving.

As the death count rises, many officials say this is only the beginning of what's sure to prove the most devastating natural disaster in the region in more than two centuries.

Because of the extreme poverty facing this nation, they don't have the infrastructure to bring in enough food or water for survivors, which often leads to riots, looting and general civil unrest. Nations of the world need to stand up to this and to keep the situation from turning bad to worse.

America at its best.

American Idolaholic

Ok, I know I am going to get a bunch of razzing on this, but I am one of the twenty five million Americans who are an American Idolaholic. Yes, I have idol mania and I am not making any apologies for it.

When I was a watching idol’s first season I fell in love with the show. American Idol quickly became my favorite show. I have enjoyed it ever since the first season. I have no idea how I have become so attached to the show because I am certainly not a music buff unless it is country music.

Simon Cowell is the star of the show without being a star. His demeanor has infuriated contestants and judges alike and he has always made the show worth watching. Cowell is at his best during the audition phase of the show.

I have laughed out loud so many times when the American Idol judges criticize contestants who cannot sing. I know I cannot belt out a note in tune and I also know that I would never appear on American Idol and embarrass myself. I embarrass myself enough in one day without singing. The only person who thinks I can sing besides me, is my son and he is 9 months old. I am one of the best shower singers in the world, however.

I believe everyone should follow their dreams. I try to encourage all of my students the best I can, but and I mean but, someone has to reign a few of these folks on this show in. The anger I see from the contestants who do not make the show makes me nervous. There is no way that there can be that many people who are mentally unstable. I know theatre folks are a bit of a special breed and I love their spunk, but seriously people.

I watch the show because there is no better collection of young talent on stage anywhere. To listen to music each and every night and to see a star in the making is absolutely fabulous. I will watch the show and I will enjoy it regardless of what people think of my manhood.

Weekly Thought Bonanza January 10th

On Sunday/Monday, I produce a column called “The Weekly Thought Bonanza”. The column is based on all of the random thoughts that run through my head all week, and trust me there are a plethora of them. I will try to share as many of these thoughts as I can, so each one of my readers can think just a little bit extra over the coming week. After my short holiday break the “Bonanza is back.

Who had a tougher holiday Charlie Sheen or Tiger Woods?

The New York Jets might be the sleeper team during the NFL playoffs this year. A great running game and a good defense goes a long way in the playoffs. Dallas might just be the best team in the playoffs, however.

Robin Williams has not done a decent movie in a long long time. His stand up is still vintage Robin, but his movies are just pitiful lately. Whatever you do, do not rent the World’s Greatest Dad DVD with Williams. You will fall asleep.

It scares me that I am now closer to sixty than I am to twenty. My life is flying by and I still have so much to do. Hopefully I can start slowing down the aging processes sooner rather than later.

Among the things that I have seen this week that struck me the most is the political pundits who have said over and over again that 2010 will be the year of change in Congress. Didn’t we just elect change?

The Akhmed the Dead terrorist skits on u-tube are absolutely the funniest skits I have seen in a long time. I hope they keep up the skits.

Blow Pops now come without the stick in a mini version. What will they think of next?

With all the coverage issues I get on my cell phone the Verizon and the AT&T commercials would make you think you would get service on Mount Everest, however.

What is the difference between a toy and an empty coke bottle to a nine month old? Absolutely nothing?

All of a sudden Pepsi has decided to add sugar back into their soft drinks than high fructose syrup. My question is what is the difference? To me they both are not really good for you.

If you live in New England do not buy a BMW 750 and drive it in the snow. You are better off with a Toyota Corolla.

Jesse Ventura’s Conspiracy Theory is an interesting concept, but I am not quite sure that it is totally believable.

The Weekly Thought Bonanza thought of the week; If in fact the Democrats lose Ted Kennedy’s senate seat in Massachusetts then they are in real trouble in 2010.
