America at it's best

America is at its best this week and it is about time the rest of the world follows suit. The situation is dire and grave in Haiti, and America is showing its red this week. That is America’s big red heart. When needed that heart explodes with affection. Even in this economy, America comes through time and time again.

The President has pledged one hundred million dollars in tax payer money and a floating United States Navy Hospital. The Haitian people need help and it would be a lot better if the world’s nations would also pitch in. For the sake of human decency it is the right thing to do.

The international Red Cross estimated 45,000 to 50,000 people were killed in Tuesday's cataclysmic earthquake, based on information from the Haitian Red Cross and government officials. Hard-pressed recovery teams resorted to using bulldozers to transport loads of dead.

In Washington, President Barack Obama announced "one of the largest relief efforts in our recent history," starting with $100 million in aid. The U.S. Southern Command reported the first 100 of a planned 900 paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division landed in Haiti from North Carolina on Thursday to support disaster relief, to be followed this weekend by more than 2,000 Marines.

President Barack Obama promised an all-out rescue and humanitarian effort including the military and civilian emergency teams from across the U.S. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was expected to arrive off the coast Thursday and the Navy said the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan had been ordered to sail as soon as possible with a 2,000-member Marine unit

On Thursday morning's "The Early Show" on CBS, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton asked Americans to contribute to the Red Cross via text donations. And on social networks Twitter and Facebook, users continued to urge one another to text money as well.

Other charities, such as singer Wyclef Jean's Yele, were also collecting mobile donations. To send $5, donors can text "Yele" to the number 501501. The William J. Clinton Foundation was accepting $10 per text from users sending the word "Haiti" to 20222.

Verizon Wireless said Thursday morning its users have pledged more than $1 million to the Red Cross through text donations. The outpouring easily surpassed earlier records for mobile giving.

As the death count rises, many officials say this is only the beginning of what's sure to prove the most devastating natural disaster in the region in more than two centuries.

Because of the extreme poverty facing this nation, they don't have the infrastructure to bring in enough food or water for survivors, which often leads to riots, looting and general civil unrest. Nations of the world need to stand up to this and to keep the situation from turning bad to worse.

America at its best.
